Buying a singing bowl online feels like buying a violin by photograph. You cannot hear the one thing you are paying for. After sourcing hundreds of hand-hammered bowls, I can tell you the secret: the photograph is the sound - if you know how to read size, wall, and hammer marks. This guide teaches you to read them.

Rule one: size sets pitch

The single most common regret among first-time buyers is going too small. A 4-inch bowl is a lovely bell; it is not the oceanic hum you saw in the video. If the budget forces a choice, choose fewer inches of brass and more centimeters of bowl.
Rule two: wall thickness sets sustain
Thick-rimmed bowls ring longer and forgive a clumsy strike - the tone blooms even if your mallet technique is terrible, which at first it will be. Thin-walled bowls answer faster to rim-singing and produce shimmering overtones, but they decay sooner and punish bad technique. First bowl: thick rim. Second bowl, once your wrist has learned the circle: thin and lively.

Rule three: hammer marks tell the truth
Dense, irregular faceting across the body means the bowl was hammered into shape by hand - thousands of strikes that leave the metal acoustically complex, rich in overtones. A perfectly smooth, mirror-symmetric bowl was spun by machine: cleaner tone, simpler, and to my ear, less alive. Neither is a scam - but they should not cost the same, and machine bowls are routinely photographed in moody light and sold at hand-forged prices.
The hammer marks are not decoration. They are the recording of how the instrument was built.
How to play it (two skills, ten minutes)
The strike: use the felt side of the mallet, hit the outer rim at a slight upward angle, and let it ring fully out before striking again. This is your session bell.
The sing: press the wooden side of the mallet firmly against the outer rim and circle slowly - the most common error is speed. Pressure, not velocity, builds the voice. Expect rattling for the first few days; your wrist is learning a circle it has never drawn.
Building the corner
A bowl alone is an object; a bowl plus a seat plus a scent is a practice. The traps nobody mentions
Trap 1 - "Tibetan antique". Genuine antique bowls exist and cost accordingly. The $40 "antique" with artificial darkening in the recesses is last year's casting with shoe polish. Buy new and honest over fake and old.
Trap 2 - The crystal-vs-metal confusion. Crystal bowls produce a pure single sine-like tone; metal bowls produce layered overtones. Videos rarely label which you are hearing. If you fell in love with a complex shimmering hum, you want hammered metal.
Trap 3 - The bowl shelf. One bowl used daily beats seven displayed. Collections happen; start with one voice and learn it completely.
